Honey Mustard Salad Dressing Recipe
One of my absolute favorite ways to douse a good ole’ Chicken Cobb Salad is in a creamy homemade honey mustard dressing.
However, most of the ones I find at the grocery stores are either too sweet, too tangy, or have a TON of ingredients in them, like gluten, modified corn starch, or a ton of other additives!
But did you know that it is actually super simple to whip up a homemade vinaigrette?
This easy recipe is the best way to make your own dressing that perfectly fits your flavor preferences. Take your salad and dipping game up to the next level.

What is Honey Mustard?
Honey mustard is a combination of mustard and honey, with a few other ingredients to round it out. Many people describe it as sweet and tangy, but the flavor entirely depends on the ratio of ingredients. It is perfect on salads or as a dipping sauce!
There are a few amazing qualities about this recipe:
- It doubles as a salad dressing or a dipping sauce. Pour it over your favorite leafy greens or use it as a sauce and serve it with some Paleo chicken strips or air fryer chicken nuggets.
- You will only need 5 ingredients!
- 5 minutes is all it takes.

Ingredients
The simple ingredients you need to make this creamy honey mustard recipe include:
- Honey. A light honey works best, but you can also use dark or amber honey if that is what you happen to have.
- Mustard. There are a few different types you can use. Dijon mustard gives a nice kick without being too overwhelming and is the best type to use. Yellow mustard can be used in place of Dijon mustard without too much sacrifice on flavor. Spicy brown mustard will be a bit spicier and is recommended if making this recipe for an adult crowd. Whole grain mustard will drastically affect the texture.
- Vinegar. White wine vinegar is used in this recipe, but you can also use apple cider vinegar if you happen to have that on hand instead.
- Olive Oil. A good quality olive oil will give you a better-tasting finished product.
- Salt. Add as much or as little salt as you like.
Pro tip: Try to find a local honey to help your body build up an immunity to local allergens.
How to Make Honey Mustard Dressing?
Below, you’ll find the basic steps for making this easy honey mustard dressing:
Gather Ingredients
It’s so simple to make dressings at home! There are a few items that make the process even easier.
- High Speed Blender: The NutriBullet is my favorite way to make homemade salad dressings. It blends and emulsifies everything up beautifully and is super easy to clean.
- Mini Food Processor: My second favorite way to make a vinaigrette is to add all of the ingredients to a food processor and process until smooth.
- Whisk by Hand: Lastly, if you do not have a blender or food processor you can always whisk the ingredients together by hand. Just note, it will not be nearly as smooth.
Make the Dressing
Add all of the ingredients to the blender or processor, or to a mason jar or bowl.
Pulse for 20-30 seconds until combined. OR, whisk until the dressing comes together.
Note, you will need to re-mix the dressing by giving it a good shake after storing it in the fridge before each use.

Does honey mustard have dairy?
Typically, honey mustard does NOT have dairy. This recipe is dairy-free. However, be sure to read the ingredients of any purchased types to be sure!
Is honey mustard healthy? Gluten-free? Vegan?
Yes, homemade honey mustard is a relatively healthy salad dressing, especially when compared to the store bought kind. But do note, it does still contain quite a bit of calories and carbohydrates from the olive oil and honey.
If you are gluten-free, dairy-free, or vegetarian, you are in luck because this version will fit your dietary requirements.
However, if you are vegan, it does contain honey which is technically an animal product. You can always try substituting the honey for maple syrup or agave nectar.
And for those on a keto or low-carb diet: Honey mustard is generally full of carbs and is not recommended when following one of these diets. You can substitute some of the honey for Stevia to help reduce the calorie and carbohydrate count.

How long does homemade honey mustard dressing last?
Honey mustard dressing can be stored in an airtight container (such as these cute glass mason jars!) in the refrigerator for 1-2 months.
Can I freeze honey mustard?
Honey mustard can be frozen to preserve shelf life. Be sure to store it in an airtight container with as little oxygen touching the sauce as possible. It should last for up to 12 to 15 months.
Expert Tips and Tricks
- Spruce it up. Add some fresh lemon juice to add brightness to the dressing.
- DIY. It’s so simple to make a big batch of your own salad dressing and have it on hand for later!
- Make it yours. You can adjust the amount of honey and type of mustard to get a tangier or sweeter flavor.
- Go local. Honey from your area will also help with allergies AND support farmers in your community.
- Make it work. This recipe makes the perfect dipping sauce and still goes well with delicious salads. The possibilities are endless!

What to Serve with Honey Mustard?
The real question is, what CAN’T you serve with honey mustard sauce?!
Seriously, you can serve this up as a dipping sauce with Healthy Chicken Tenders, Air Fryer Boneless Chicken Thighs, Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Wings, or even on Hot Honey Chicken.
Of course, it’s delicious as a vinaigrette for a Cobb Salad, or change up the flavor on Massaged Kale Salad or a Fall Harvest Salad.
